Achieving balance in a surgical life: A personal perspective on a Sisyphean task

Abstract 

Balance in a surgical career is salutary to the mental and physical health of the practitioner. Maintaining a balanced life is beneficial to the individual surgeon, to patients and to medical organizations. The many aspects of balance are explored and the authors personal approach in attempting to achieve balance are discussed.
