      Abstract

      • 1.
        1. Lumbar sympathectomy, as it is commonly performed, will not limit the extension of gangrene in advanced arteriosclerotic peripheral vascular disease.
      • 2.
        2. The operation appears to be helpful in delineating the site of amputation below the knee.
      • 3.
        3. Anatomic and antibiotic considerations are mentioned.
      • 4.
        4. A suggested plan for the care of these patients is briefly presented.
