Abstract
The frequency of gallstones in young adults continues to be unappreciated. From four
to twenty per cent of reported series of cholecystectomies are in patients under thirty
years of age. In an analysis of 178 patients under thirty, 150 of whom underwent cholecystectomy,
a considerable difference was apparent in the clinical picture of biliary tract disease
as compared to patients over thirty years of age. The sex ratio is one man to five
women. The incidence of acute cholecystitis is three to four times greater in the
young patient. Pain limited to the epigastrium and radiation of pain was far greater
in young patients, thus adding confusion to the diagnosis. Fatty food intolerance
and complaints of dyspepsia, eructation and flatulence are not common in young patients.
The presence of associated disease is extremely uncommon. Patients under thirty years
of age tolerate cholecystectomy with a gratifyingly low morbidity rate and no mortality.
