      Abstract

In conclusion, it has been pointed out that radiotherapy has a very important part to play in the curative management of many tumours of the head and neck. It is essential that a properly equipped department and adequately trained personnel are available since, if such is not the case, we are talking about something other than radiotherapy. Irradiation therapy should not be considered as a competitor of surgery. Both are required, sometimes separately and sometimes in combination in the management of these tumours. The radiotherapist should have an equal voice with the surgeon in the pretreatment discussion on management, and this equality of influence should exist in fact and not merely in theory.
