Abstract
Clinical signs and symptoms of perihepatic abscess have become less obvious with the
increasing use of antibiotics and corticosteroids. The role of radiologic studies
in the diagnosis of suspected perihepatic abscess has increased. Right subphrenic,
right subhepatic, intrahepatic, and lesser sac abscesses can present with the same
clinical manifestations. The surgical approach is quite different, making accurate
anatomic localization necessary. The investigation of a series of cases of perihepatic
abscesses from the Johns Hopkins Hospital is reported. The diversity of presentation
of such cases is illustrated with examples. The usefulness of abdominal radiographs,
liver and lung scans as well as contrast studies is demonstrated. A system for the
investigation of suspected abscess in the right upper quadrant is proposed.
