Residents enter training programs with different baseline life experiences, skills,
medical knowledge, and talent. They do not grow in their abilities as physicians and
surgeons at the same rate. Likewise, surgery residency is long, and residents may
encounter life obstacles that derail their continued progress. Residents are all allotted
the same amount of time in general surgery residency training to become competent
surgeons. However, few residents navigate this process without setbacks. Reports vary
greatly on the number of residents whose performance diverges from acceptable performance
significantly enough that they need additional assistance or remediation.
