We read the article “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Presidential Leadership of
Academic Medical and Surgical Societies” and laud the authors on their attempts to
objectively quantify diversity efforts within leadership positions of national medical
and surgical societies.

Most national medical organizations cite diversity, equity, and inclusion as a pillar
within their mission statements, but measurable efforts to live up to these words
are sometimes lacking. The authors demonstrate how commitment to these values can
be measured both quantitatively and qualitatively. Such metrics also allow for comparisons
