The promise of patient reported outcome measurements in endocrine surgery

      When a patient sees a physician, they ultimately just want to know: “Will this treatment help me?” In cervical Endocrine Surgery, this question is usually not “Will this help me live longer?” but rather “Will this help me feel and function better?” Quality of Life (QOL) in thyroid and parathyroid disease is often patient-specific and does not necessarily correlate to the biochemical severity of disease. In addition, many recent advances in Endocrine Surgery treatments have been focused on issues that affect a patient's QOL, including performing less extensive operations and altering the treatment type or operative approach to minimize or avoid cervical incisions. Understanding how a patient feels is the key to understanding their perspectives and treatment priorities, as well as in engaging them in educated decision-making.
