Using the operating microscope to improve ergonomics for thyroidectomy

      Surgeons of any discipline can develop significant musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders from the repetitive, fixed, unnatural postures required during surgery. Endocrine surgery is no different. In a recent survey, 90% of endocrine and head and neck - endocrine surgeons, at all levels of experience, described MSK symptoms.

      Endocrine surgeons have high rates of work-related musculoskeletal (MSK) injury and symptoms.
      The common use of headlights and loupes in the field contribute to this problem. These disorders adversely affect wellness, and can lead to forced changes in practice, early retirement, and even a career change. Ergonomics in surgery is becoming more important because of this increasing recognition and reporting of MSK disorders causing significant problems within the surgical workforce.
